Aspidistrafly: I Hold A Wish For You - A Dreamy Ambient Folk Album
Aspidistrafly is a Singaporean duo consisting of April Lee and Ricks Ang, who create dreamy ambient folk music with acoustic instruments, vocals, field recordings and electronic textures. Their first full-length album, I Hold A Wish For You, was released in 2008 on Kitchen. Label, and has been praised for its delicate and pastoral sonic scapes.
The album draws inspiration from Banana Yoshimoto's novel Moonlight Shadow, which explores themes of loss, loneliness and healing. Aspidistrafly weaves through the solitary atmosphere of the novel with their own narratives inspired by their travels outside their immediate surroundings. The album consists of nine tracks that range from gentle acoustic guitar melodies to ethereal vocal harmonies to ambient drone pieces.
The album opens with candlescape, a soothing track that features April's soft vocals over a backdrop of guitar strums, piano chords and subtle electronic sounds. The second track, Moonlight Shadow, is a tribute to the novel and its protagonist Satsuki, who loses her boyfriend in a car accident. The track is a haunting and beautiful rendition of Mike Oldren's 1983 hit song of the same name, with April singing in both English and Japanese over a sparse arrangement of guitar, piano and violin.
The album continues with common colors in the air, a playful track that incorporates field recordings of children playing and birds chirping, creating a contrast between the innocence of childhood and the melancholy of adulthood. The fourth track, sampling atmosphere, is a short interlude that showcases Aspidistrafly's skill in creating atmospheric soundscapes with minimal elements. The fifth track, On the Summer Solstice, is a bright and uplifting track that celebrates the longest day of the year with cheerful guitar plucks, warm vocal harmonies and shimmering synth pads.
The sixth track, porcelain sky wink, is a tender and nostalgic track that features April's whispered vocals over a gentle guitar melody and ambient noises. The seventh track, sui, is a dark and mysterious track that creates a sense of tension and suspense with distorted guitar drones, eerie vocal samples and metallic percussion. The eighth track, Endless Dreamless, is a soothing and dreamy track that features April's angelic vocals over a soft piano melody and ambient textures. The album closes with è±ç«, which means "fireworks" in Japanese, a fitting title for a track that bursts with colorful sounds and emotions. The track features April singing in Japanese over a rich orchestration of guitar, piano, violin, cello and drums.
I Hold A Wish For You is an invitation to travel with sound through lyrical melodies and pastoral sonic scapes, accompanied with artwork by April Lee and Kobe-based artist Rika M.
